UTD DIRECTOR WON’T ALTER TRANSFERS

Manchester United are still looking to appoint a technical director but the new role is unlikely to affect the club’s transfer policy this summer.

An appointment was expected to be made in time for the new arrival to be a part of the club’s plans for the current transfer window but with player recruitment already underway, there is no sign of when United might have their first technical director.

Former United players including Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand have been linked to the position, but it is unclear just what the roles and responsibilities of the candidate will be.

Former striker Keane is currently an assistant manager with the Republic of Ireland while Woodgate is expected to be announced as Boro’s new manager, Sky Sports News understands.

SARRI EDGING CLOSE TO EXIT

Maurizio Sarri’s ten months in charge at Stamford Bridge could soon be at an end as negotiations continue today between Juventus and Chelsea over a suitable compensation package, Sky Sports News understands.

Chelsea are holding out for the majority of the final year of Sarri’s contract, worth around £5.3m. Juventus, however, are trying to negotiate a deal without the need for compensation.

An agreement over the 60-year-old will then trigger an official approach from Chelsea to Derby for permission to speak to Frank Lampard about becoming Roman Abramovich’s 12th manager in 16 years.

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann says his future could be decided in two weeks’ time with his release clause dropping by £107m on July 1.

“There’s a need for patience, as it’s still soon,” he told Marca. “I want my future to be decided more than anyone, but there’s a need to wait. I don’t know if I’ll remain in Spain. Maybe in two weeks we’ll know something.”

MILAN INTERESTED IN LOVREN

AC Milan are interested in signing Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren, according to reports in Italy.

Lovren made just 18 appearances in all competitions last season due to injury and the form of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Milan sacked manager Gennaro Gattuso and are about to embark on a rebuilding programme, and it’s believed the Croatian – who turns 30 next month – is a top target.

The Serie A club have not made a formal offer at this point but will make their move once, as expected, Marco Giampaolo is appointed manager.

‘LAMPARD PERFECT FOR CHELSEA’

Rio Ferdinand believes his former West Ham and England team-mate Frank Lampard is the ideal candidate to takeover at Chelsea, especially if their transfer ban is upheld.

“He is the perfect choice. People talk about experience and what-not but what experience did Pep (Guardiola) have when he went into Barcelona’s first team? He trained the younger kids at the club,” added Ferdinand.

“Frank knows the club and he knows the players and the players will respect him. You can see he can carry himself in a particular way in front of the media and in the football club and he can change things within a season.

“If Chelsea are going to get a ban transfer-wise I don’t think they can look anywhere but Frank if I’m honest. Because he and Jody (Morris, Derby assistant manager) they know all the kids from 16 upwards. They know what they can all do.”

‘RANGERS SHOULD SELL MORELOS’

Rangers should sell striker Alfredo Morelos and use the money to strengthen other areas of their squad, says Kris Boyd.

“If I was Rangers I would sell him because I think that if you can get the money that teams might be willing to pay, you can go and maybe strengthen your squad or your first team with maybe three or four other players who can make a big difference,” said former Rangers striker Boyd on the latest episode of Transfer Talk.

NEW HUDSON-ODOI CONTRACT?

Chelsea wonderkid Callum Hudson-Odoi will sign a new deal – but only if he is guaranteed minutes, The Sun reports.

The 18-year-old shone towards the end of last season before rupturing his Achilles in April, with Chelsea’s ongoing managerial uncertainty playing a part in the delay.

Should he sign a new deal, the newspaper claims he will be given the coveted No 10 shirts, left vacant by the outgoing Eden Hazard.

07:57
‘MY FUTURE UP TO UTD’

Romelu Lukaku called for Manchester United to decide his future after his double kept Belgium on course to qualify for Euro 2020.

Asked if he will still be a Manchester United player next season, Lukaku said: “It’s up to the club. The club have to come out with statements. I’m not here to entertain any rumours.

“I just play my football and we’ll take it from there.”

07:44
RIO INTRIGUED BY UTD DIRECTORS ROLE

Rio Ferdinand admits he is interested in becoming Manchester United’s first technical director but says the role has not yet been defined by the club.

“It all depends on the shape of the job,” Ferdinand said when asked if he fancied returning to the club. “I don’t think it’s all been outlined at Man United in terms of ‘that’s the job and this is the description’. I think there’s a lot to talk about within that.

“To be fair to Man United, in that kind of role, the responsibility that comes with that, you can’t lie and say that that’s not a turn-on.

“Because you are helping to shape the fortunes of a club of that stature. That’s a huge job.”

WOODGATE UPDATE…

A Boro legend as a player, Woodgate had been one of Tony Pulis’s assistants until Pulis left the job at the end of the season after they missed out on the Championship play-offs.
Woodgate had retired from his playing days at Boro – his boyhood club – in 2017 and was immediately given a job among the academy coaching staff.

Boro owner and chairman Steve Gibson has a track record of giving the club’s top former players a chance as at management, having introduced both Bryan Robson and Gareth Southgate to the role.

And the ex-England centre-back Woodgate, who went on to play for Real Madrid and Tottenham in a successful but injury-plagued career, looks to be the next man given his first foray into management.

Woodgate came through the ranks on Teesside before switching to Leeds in 1996 and breaking into senior football at Elland Road, and he also had spells at Newcastle and Stoke City before retiring at 36 at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Meanwhile, Percovich was goalkeeping coach under Aitor Karanka, who has also been linked with a return to the club, but is understood not to have held talks with Gibson about doing so.

WEST BROM CLOSE IN ON BILIC

Slaven Bilic is close to agreeing a deal to become WBA’s new head coach, Sky Sports News understands.

A number of face-to-face meetings have taken place between Bilic and West Brom bosses, and whilst at first there was “substantial distance” between both sides over the issue of salary, there is now broad agreement on that, and other key issues.

One source has even told us that Bilic has been made a formal offer from Albion to take over the job, but there’s been no comment from the club, who are remaining tight-lipped about the process.

It’s thought only a few legal issues are left to address.

‘MARGINALISED DYBALA FACES JUVE EXIT’

Paul Dybala is likely to be forced out of Juventus this summer after being marginalised since the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Italian football expert Adam Digby.

Digby, the author of ‘Juventus: A History in Black and White’, told Sky Sports News: “I think Dybala will be the one player who is forced to move on. I think the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo forced Juventus to play a front three for the most of last season and the only position available to Dybala in that system is wide on the right – that doesn’t suit him.

“He is much more comfortable down the middle behind a conventional No 9. And he has really struggled to adapt to that this season. It’s been his poorest season since he arrived at Juventus in 2015. He only scored three goals in the league and he really is the player that has been marginalised by Ronaldo’s presence.

“I can fully see him moving on this summer in search of somewhere he can play his more natural role.”

17:33
BRADFORD SIGN ISMAIL

Bradford have signed Walsall winger Zeli Ismail.

Ismail will officially become a Bradford player on July 1 when his contract with Walsall expires.

As a footballer you do not want to hide, you want to play in front of the kind of support we have here. Who would not want to play in front of these fans? It is what playing football is all about!”

BARCELONA CLOSE ON BAGGIES TEEN

Barcelona are closing in on West Bromwich Albion’s 15-year-old Louie Barry.

Sky Sports News understands West Brom are keen on keeping hold of the prodigious teen, but fear a move to the Nou Camp may prove too tempting to turn down.

The striker, who has been at The Hawthorns since he was six, has attracted the attentions of a host of top clubs after scoring 10 goals in five games for England U15s.

Barry went on to claim the golden boot at the Val-de-Marne U16s tournament in November last year and three months later, scored two goals for England’s U16s against Brazil.

He has also played for the Republic of Ireland’s youth teams, being eligible to play for both countries.

14:56
SARRI – JUVE FANS UNDERWHELMED?

Our colleagues at Sky in Italy understand Maurizio Sarri will be allowed to join Juventus as soon as Chelsea have sorted a replacement.

Italian football expert Adam Digby has been speaking to Sky Sports News about the mood in Turin.

“I think the Juve fans are likely to be a bit underwhelmed – they seem to have been promised Pep Guardiola or Mauricio Pochettino all summer! Some reports have suggested the delay is because Juve are still holding out hope they could get someone else.

“Sarri is a gruff character who has antagonised Juve fans in the past. It remains to be seen how long it takes for him to win over the fans.

“It seems to take time for Sarri to settle and embed his ideas. That doesn’t really seem to mesh with Juve, where there’s an urge to win immediately. They need to modernise their style and Sarri can certainly do that but he’s spoken previously about playing well and finishing second and Juve’s style and tradition is to win at all costs – otherwise they will feel the money they’ve spent on Cristiano Ronaldo and other players will be going to waste.”

14:30
COUTINHO’S ADMISSION

Former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has opened up about his Barcelona struggles.

Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 but has failed to command a regular place, starting only 22 games in La Liga last term.

“I have not had a good season,” the Brazil international said in quotes reported by Marca.

“My performances have been a lot worse than I expected they would. The only way to improve and gain confidence is through hard work, and I have been working hard.”

The Spanish paper claims both Barcelona and Coutinho are “actively seeking a move away” for the player and that, as things stand, PSG are leading the race to sign him.

The Eagles are prepared to make a move for him if they do end up letting Wan-Bissaka leave for Old Trafford.

UNITED, PALACE INTERESTED IN AARONS

If Crystal Palace sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United, Norwich City right back Max Aarons is their number one target as a replacement.

However, United are ALSO interested in the 19-year-old.

Aarons, who played a key role in Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League, EFL young player of the season and also in the Championship PFA team of the season.
