Agboyi indigenes protest murder of community youth

Violent protest rocked Agboyi riverine community in Agboyi Ketu Local Council Development Authority a political sub set of Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State over the alleged murder of an indigene of the town Mr Toheeb Sanni by unidentified assailants.

Toheeb a power generator repair expert and a commercial motorcycle operator corpse was discovered floating on the Agboyi creek yesterday Tuesday the 7th by members of the community while washing clothes on the bank of the creek.

Toheeb who prior to the discovery of his corpse has been missing since Sunday evening. Divers brought out his bloated body that has been mutilated with evidence of knife stabs, his throat silted and one of his eyes plucked, while his hands and legs tied.

This discovery led to the violence that almost consumed the community. Youths from Agboyi 1, Agboyi 2, Agboyi 3 and other sub communities such as Oko Agbon set many motorcycle ablaze and set on settlers in the community specifically those who came to settle there from Ila and Ikire towns in Osun State.

According to the submission from a chieftain
of Agboyi Kingdom Prince Timothy Ishola Bankole; Toheeb was given a new motorcycle by his elder brother.

Due to the fact that the three Agboyi riverine communities are linked to the Alapere mainland exclusively via canoe shuttles, residents who owned any automobile had to leave their vehicles on the mainland.

Toheeb issue started on Sunday the 5th of August when he parked his new motorcycle at the central community park, he was approached by one of the “Ila boys” that he wants to test drive the new seven gear motorcycle, he obliged the request when the bike was returned, another “Ila boy” approached him to test drive the bike, he equally obliged, however when the third “Ila boy” approached him to test drive the bike, he refused, this led to a serious fight between him and the “Ila boys”.

Toheeb reported the matter at Alapere Police station, he was told to return the following day, since he left the station no one heard from him.

In his words “Toheeb family members were aware he was in a fight with some individuals at the park, and had gone to report the matter at the police station, they awaited his return to no avail

“On Monday members of his immediate family, friends and community members awaited his return, they were not so worried knowing that he may decide to go underground due to his insistence on police handling the matter.

“It was while they were on their way home that information reached both parties heard Toheeb’s corpse was discovered floating on the creek. This was the beginning of the mayhem that led to the burning of several motorcycles and vandalization of several properties of suspected perpetrators of the murder, this set the Agboyi indigenes against the settlers in the community”

It took the intervention of several deployment of armed policemen, armoured personnel carrier and mobile holding trucks to quell the riot that almost led to the breach of public peace.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Alapere Station personally led the team that ferried the corpse of Toheeb to the morgue and effect the arrest suspects.”

Investigation is presently ongoing to determine the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
